Born in Delhi, Darshan Kumari received her early training in Sitar from Shri Raj Kumar Bali and later on with Shri Jamaluddin Bhartiya, a senior disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. She also has had extensive training from the famous Veena player Ustad Ziamoinuddin Dagar. This amalgamation of training has enabled Darshan to evolve a style of her own and express her music with a distinct lyricism and pathos. One can clearly feel the spiritual calm during her performance.

In India she was a regular broadcaster with All Indian Radio,Yuv Vani programme. Academically she is a Master of Arts (M.A.)in Music from the University of Punjab.

In 1971, Darshan went to Athens, Greece after an invitation to teach and perform music. In 1972 she came to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and taught Sitar at the Royal Tropical Institute. Since then she has performed all over Europe, notably The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and England; both as teacher and as concert artist.

She also did several tours in the United States. To promote Indian music she was the driving force to establish Tritantri Vidya Peeth in 1974, the only music school of its kind at that time in The Netherlands. She also organised many concert tours for well-known musicians in Europe. In 1980 she founded RIPA School of Indian Arts in Amsterdam, of which she is the Director.

Darshan made her debut on the Dutch television in the programme "Jonge mensen op het concert podium" (Young people at the concert stage) and is at present on tha advisory committee of several Indian music organisations. Aside from giving concerts, some of them for the Dutch Royal Family, Concert Gebouw and World Music Festivals, she has also taken part in musical scores for several films and still is a regular performer for the Dutch Television.

Darshan has also carved a niche for herself in The Netherlands as a very dedicated teacher in Sitar.
At present, besides receiving regular valuable guidance from Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, she also enriches her knowledge of music by studying with Prof. Debu Chaudhuri and Shri Buddhaditya Mukherji.
